The Clothespin Mandala project deals with the phenomenon of human body
modification, specifically in the form of suspending clothespins from
one’s body. In Female Cluster and Male Cluster, I draw seven body fragments
for each gender from photographs of my bare body and of a male model with
clothespins attached in various patterns. The Wildlife Triptychs and
Wildlife Portraits continue this investigation of body modification on paper
with pencil, watercolor and mixed media by asking volunteers to pose
individually and/or with their partner to create portraits or triptychs.
These gender-specific clothespin clusters as well as the triptychs and portraits
not only muse on the contemporary penchant for hanging, piercing and tattooing
the body but also raise questions of identity and sexuality, demonstrating just
how fine the line is between pain and pleasure.
